Abstract: Presently, more than fifty percent of the total building construction projects in Bangkok are of the shophouse type. This is attributable to the economic aspects generated by this type of building. However, multidimensional problems are still being encountered by both the users and the general public. This research deals with the acceptability of an improved prototype design for shophouses by the users. On the basis of thirty in-depth interviews with shophouse users on a preliminary model shophouse, a final model was prepared, After revisions and suggestions for alternative design options to meet the users’ preferences as well as legal implications, it was found that construction costs would be only three percent higher than in the conventional shophouse type. The study concludes that the plans and proposals under the prototype scheme could be expected to bring about significant improvements on the existing design and siting of future shophouse development projects.
