Abstract: In transmigration projects which emphasize agriculture development, marketing facilities and market places are very important. Information on the rural market, particularly in transmigration areas, is still scarce. Because of this lack of information, some of the transmigration projects have not been very successful due to inadequate marketing facilities. This study which was conducted from 1st to 30th September 1981, attempted to investigate the role of the rural market, particularly with reference to marketing production selling and buying patterns, and the expenditure pattern of transmigrates. In most peasant societies, markets are periodic rather than regular and continuous. The study attempted to develop a formula to estimate the market potential, based on the relation of household expenditures, number of customers and traders, and the return expected by the traders. The Siting I Transmigration Area was selected for this study. Three Block markets inside and 4 markets outside this area were selected 158 transmigrant households, 148 traders and visitors at the markets during the market days were taken as sample respondents for this study. Based on the market preference of transmigrants, and their buying and selling pattern, the rural markets in the transmigration area can be categorized. This information is required for planning the provision of market centres. Some recommendations have been presented to improve the planning of marketing facilities.
