Abstract: Employment in the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector in Bangladesh provides female Workers with economic benefits and some empowennent. Ilowevcr, many workers are unable to continue to work for a prolonged period. As a consequence of joblessness, they also lose the benefits that come with employment. The present study attempts to explore the reasons why women RMG workers have to leave their jobs and how their socioeconomic conditions and intra-household relations are changed after leaving jobs. The study is based mainly on case studies of 25 former workers from the Mohammadpur and Mohakhali areas of Dhaka City. It was found that opposition by husbands do not figure as an important cause, but problems with health, pregnancy and child birth, and oppressive factory policies that affect health and marital relations, are the leading causes for quitting jobs. Marriage and marital relations indirectly, in connection with the other factors may be responsible for the women’s leaving jobs. Income loss after joblessness leads to lower a standard of living. Husbands can become more oppressive and less cooperative some even stop supporting the family. Based on the experience of the informants and key persons involved in the RMG sector, recommendations are made to overcome the issues that prevent women’s RMG employment and the resulting benefits from being more sustainable
