Abstract: The study is undertaken to analyze the impact of community development programmes implemented by three different Non-Governmental Organizations of the state of Orissa, India. The study examines the organizational environment, with respect to their functioning to achieve success of development programmes at the grassroots. To assess the performance of different sectors of development four programmes have been selected, viz., education, health, community forestry and agriculture. The primary data was collected through individual household survey by structured questionnaire, group discussion with villagers and special discussion with both villagers and the NGO personnel through RRA and PRA. The findings related to socio-economic change reveal that there is a considerable impact of the development programme on the occupation pattern and standard of living of the poor tribal people. The constituency people of these NGOs are much aware about different government programmes. A lot of effort have been made by these NGOs for education programme, which is an entry point for them. Different educational facilities, namely, nonformal education, innovative education, residential school, and adult education have very good impact in terms of improving personal consciousness of the deprived people. In the NFE centres health education classes deal mainly with personal hygiene, health care and nutritional information. Physical health check-up are also undertaken by CYSD and Gram Vikas with their professional doctors. For the sustainability of the health programme a revolving fund is running in the study villages. Regular training also provided to the village health workers, NFE teachers and animators as selected by the community. These NGOs have very successful achievement in community forestry. Among the three organizations Gram Vikas has a long history in social forestry and the participation of the communities is very much satisfactory.
