Situation of Tut and Gay conscripts in the Thai Military

Abstract: The Thai army recruited all Thai men who are 21 years old to serve the military without considering the other gender identity such as a gay group. Therefore, all Thai gay person has to pass the military selection without gendered exception. This thesis is studying the situation of gay conscripts in the military, gay conscript treatments from soldiers, effects from the other soldiers’ treatments and coping with the effects. The qualitative research is collecting data from the in-depth interview with key-informants such as the army recruitment, the army training unit and the NGO which is working on the LGBT and the army selection. Also, get the in-depth information from 15 gay conscripts who already served the army in their situation, treatments, effect and coping in the military. To study about the gay conscript situation in the military, a gay conscript separated into two types in the military such as ‘coming out’ and ‘closeted’ the self-sexual-disclosure. Interestingly, the sexual self – disclosure is the crucial variable in the military that gay conscript who is coming out must face a negative treatment from other soldiers. Contrast, a gay conscript who is closeted their sexual orientation gets the practicing as the other soldiers in the military. However, there are three main factors such as lacking gender knowledge, personal gender bias and gender stereotyped discourse from the other soldiers affected to the gay conscripts’ treatment in the military which is only happened to a gay conscript, other soldiers do not face. The treatment of a gay conscript from other soldiers is called gender identity instead of the name, be the entertainer in the military, be punished by gendered reason, faced verbal sexual harassments, non-verbal SH, and action SH.
