Abstract: The right of existence for informal sector in city centers cannot be denied any more by considering the fact that around 50% of urban occupations belong t o informal or quasi-formal employments in the cities of developing countries. However, the absence of political commitment of the city governments as well as their reluctance to interfere with the urban land marl< et mechanism have s o far lead to a situation where informal sector is neglected or mis-treated in spatial planning. This is a major planning problem which affects the integration of informal sector in urban developments and re-developments in developing countries. This study attempts to review several urban re-structuring techniques which have potential to address the accommodation problem of the informal sector. The review of each technique is supplemented by few case studies drawn from Asian countries. The study concluds by identifying criteria which has lead to successful implementation of these informal sector oriented projects. Scholarship Donor(s):
