Abstract: The research assessed the participatory technology development (PTD) approach of poor farmers’ participation and benefits gained from the application of this approach which was implemented in Ba Ria-Vung Tau (BR-VT) province, Vietnam. The specific objectives of this research were to examine the process and mechanism of the PTD approach applied in agricultural extension delivered for the poor farmers to examine participation of the poor farmers in the PTD process to assess social, economic and institutional benefits of the poor farmers gained from the PTD approach to analyze strengths and limitations of the PTD approach in agricultural extension applied to the poor farmers and to suggest the recommendations to strengthen the PTD application in agricultural extension for the poor farmers in future. This research was conducted in seven communes in the Southeast province of Vietnam, Ba Ria- Vung Tau, using a survey questionnaire with a total of 80 sampled households participating as local members of seven PTD clubs in the Participatory Agricultural Extension Project. The research was applied primarily quantitative analysis with the support of qualitative approach. The research found that the PTD process was designed systematically to solicit participation of the poor farmers who were members of the PTD club in BR-VT province. The higher intensity of farmers’ participation in the PTD approach yearly indicated that the poor farmers are getting more actively participation in various steps of the PTD process. The application of the PTD process has generated several kinds of social, economic and institutional benefits to the poor farmers who are members of the PTD clubs. The strengths of them and the clubs have a prospect for sustainability in future even the PTD approach has completed its implementation in this study area.
