Abstract: The study is an attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of the Small Farmer Organization Project on its members in Kobeyegana A. S. C. area (Kurunegala District , Sri Lanka). Two groups of sample, member families and non-member families were selected. Necessary data were collected from four cultivation officer divisions of the Kobeyegana A.S .C. area. By comparing the group members with non-members the study reveals that there is no considerable difference between them with regard to most of the agricultural practices and farm supporting services. This appears to be due to failure to identify the needs and problems of the target groups and the consequence is low participation of the members in the group activities. In regard to other inputs and services, the facilities prevailing in the area enabled individual farmers to take care of their needs. Thus it is c l ear that group action is less effective in a situation where farmers can solve their problems individually. Even though, the study reveals that S.F.O .P. has no considerable effect on its members, the S.F.O.P. concept is useful as poverty alleviating action programme. In respect to management of water for irrigation, the group activity seems to be positive and more effective. One has to further look into the viability of this project and by merely, nominally organizing the small farmers in to a group and expect miracles to happen is a far fetched idea.
