Assessment of the sustainability practice of the energy company group in response to sustainable development goals : a case study of Bangchak Corporation, Thailand

Abstract: The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provides a uruque opportunity to achieve sustainable development 2030 through the participation of almost all countries, public and private sectors from all walks of life. Contribution of the private sector become increasingly important to ensure the success of the SDG. Therefore, assessment of these private sector’s contributions is needed to provide a better understanding of their practice and how such practices could replicate for global success. This study assessed the sustainability of the Bangchak Energy Company in economic, social, environment, and governance dimensions to assess sustainability practices, how these practices related to SDG 7 and SDG 12, and how the company’s management staff (decision makers) perceived the company’s sustainability practices. Sustainability practices were measured by introducing the several indicators for each dimension using the scoring ranges from 1 to 5. The average scores were 4.0,4.0,4.3 and 4.5 for environment, social, economic, and governance dimensions, respectively. Overall average score was 4.2 or about 84.2%, indicating that company achieved 84.2% of sustainability practices. By comparing indicators of SDGs and that of sustainability dimensions, this revealed that sustainability practices of the company were consistent with the SDGs. In terms of perceptions of the management staff, governance dimension received the highest score (4.71), social (4.68), environment (4.67), and economic dimensions (4.65) with an average score of 4.68 for all four dimensions, indicating that management staff highly appreciated their sustainability’s overall practices. It could be concluded that Bangchak group’s overall sustainability success was that they embedded the corporate and employee culture since earlier establishment, and they have set a clear structure in operation.
