Abstract: This study examines the Cotu people’s livelihood activities and their greater integration with the market especially in the context of road construction. Increased market-based activities have changed the gender division of labor over time and increased women’s workload that presently includes trade in farm products. Significantly, Cotu men are now managers of income-based livelihoods such as the collection of rattan and rubber plantations. However, mobility patterns are still mediated by gender norms and women’s mobility to market sites are usually on foot or bicycle whereas men increasingly travel by motorbikes. Motorbikes are owned by the men in the richest households in the communes, purchased from combined income sources such as government salaries, livestock sales, sale of rattan and rubber. Poorest households are those usually employed by richer households for temporary labor, who have little land for cash crops and who depend on forest resources more heavily. Thus, the growth of markets affects different types of people in different ways, where the wealthy with the most assets benefit most whereas the poorest benefit minimally. Roads, as it has been shown in this study, build on the social stratification of communities and benefit different people in different ways.
