Abstract: The trend of labour migration has increased to a great extent due to globalization. Labour migration has become an important means of empowerment of women in Nepal. But despite of it, there are several negative facets to the labour migration which cannot be ignored. The news about violence and exploitation of Nepalese women in the gulf countries can be read and heard almost every day. As the result of this ongoing problem, Government of Nepal has time and again over the years have imposed ban against Nepalese women from travelling to the gulf countries for employment and currently also such type of ban exists. The main aim of this study is to find out the repercussions of the ban. The study focuses on the major reasons behind government to put such ban, it’s impact on the women’s mobility in travelling to the gulf countries, it’s impact on the women’s security and its impact on the income/remittance of the women as the result of the ban. The findings of the study show that although the government has imposed ban with positive intention to protect women from various forms of violence and exploitation that they might face in the gulf countries, there has been several negative impacts as the result of the ban. Majority of the women were found to be taken illegal/alternative channels to reach to their destination countries after the government ban was imposed which kept them into more vulnerable position. Further, it has been found that majority of women who travelled to the gulf during the ban period, especially the ones working for the domestic sector had to face with various sorts of problems and situations like sexual and physical assault, harassment, threat, false information and uncertainty, excessive control and inaccessibility and so on whereas, there were less case of these type of incidents in the women who travelled to the gulf countries during the No ban period.
