Abstract: These has been growing interest in the impacts of internal displacement on livelihoods of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) due to increased trend in internal displacement leading to displacement of massive number of people globally. This study aims to address the impacts of conflict induced displacement on the livelihoods of IDPs. It analyses the changes in livelihood capital assets of IDPs due to displacement, factors explaining variations among the IDPs, impacts of livelihood asset change in livelihood outcomes of IDPs displaced in Kathmandu and Dang district which are referred as the capital city and local town respectively. The analysis has been based on the data and information collected through household survey of 99 households and focused group and informal discussions with IDPs displaced in various places of Dang and Kathmandu district and, likewise for additional information non participant observation and interviews with the key informants were also conducted. The major findings shows that complete transformation in the livelihoods of IDPs has been taken place due to positive and negative changes in their access to assets. Despite their increase in access to physical and human capital of IDPs, IDPs are largely vulnerable due to negative change in their income and ownership of house. IDPs with better economic background leading to investment on real estate, particularly IDPs in the local town, are relatively less vulnerable than IDPs in the capital city though they have tolerated greater loss than IDPs in the capital city. IDPs’ income in the place of origin is one of the major factors explaining variation among IDPs in the place of displacement. It influences IDP’s access to income, physical, social as well as natural capital in the place of displacement. Presence of NGOs and INGOs and rendering of their services to IDPs along with prolonged nature of displacement, have helped IDPs particularly with less income, to reintegrate and regenerate their social capital in the place of displacement.
