Abstract: Th e research is conducted with a view to assess the impact of small irrigation system on crop production and farmers’ cereal food crop self – sufficiency in mountainous area of Bac Ai district, Ninh Thuan province in Vietnam. The surveyed area including villag es was purposively selected and stratified random sampling method was utilized to select the total sample of 92 households in four villages of Phuoc Tien commune. The field visit involved both quantitative and qualitative data collection where a set of str uctured questionnaire and checklists for discussions were used together with field observations. Data analysis is carried out by using descriptive and exploratory statistics. After the operation of the irrigation system, there have been changes in the use of agricultural inputs, production and self – sufficiency of local farmers who benefited from the irrigation system. Farmers in upper part obviously have higher water regularity and adequacy in both rainy and dry season. Meanwhile, those in lower part have very low level of water regularity and adequacy, and the situation is even worse during dry season. Although there is a slight difference in input use for both locations, farmers in lower part have higher level of increase in rice cultivation and in crop i ntensity, however, upper part still has higher crop yield per hecta, and has higher income per year than the lower part. In terms of farm size, small farmer group has the tendency of using more inputs for their rice crops. They have highest change in cro p intensity, however they do not take lead in crop yield and do not have income from crops as high as the other two groups. Small farmers almost consume all their production cereal food in order to ensure their own food self – sufficiency, and there is almos t nothing left for other household purposes and needs.
