Abstract: This is a case study of twelve new and expanding slums, analyzing patterns of s l um formation in the city of Bangkok. Location and growth patterns were identified by comparison of aerial photos and observation. The slums were then divided into two classifications of squatting and renting, and analyzed as a community, and the settlers in the community. The action by which the community possessed the land was studied, irrespective of the limits of the law. The community services of water and electricity, plus rent were analyzed in their influence on slum formation . Reasons why the settlers moved from their former home and moved into this slum were examined , as well as socio-economic differences, and their housing delivery system, as patterns of slum formation . Finally all these various factors were analyzed in drawing conclusions and recommendations for planning.
