Abstract: The objectives of this study are to prepare a chronological documentation of various types of shophouses in Bangkok, to compare the types of shophouses built in different time periods and to analyze this specific form of building and related urban structure in view of possible improvements. On the basis of 60 selected sample shophouses the physical, environmental and architectural aspects of this universal building type are studied by means of observation and interviews with shophouse occupants. The main result of the study is a documentation of the samples which are classified into three different stages. Furthermore, the relative advantages and disadvantages are assessed and ,subsequently, design criteria for an improved new type of shophouse are suggested , in terms of both building and s it planning characteristics.
