Abstract: Rapid industrialization has create ample job opportunity in Taipei city during the last two decades. This has absorbed many rural female migrants into the city. This study investigates female migrants in Taipei city and examines the role of contacts in the migration decision-making and in the migrantsΓÇó initial stage of adjustment in the city. Also studied are the job history of these females migrants’ feedback as a catalyst in the migration chain and policy implications with regard to female migration to the city. The research is based on field data collected through questionnaire interviews. with the present female migrants in Taipei belonging to the two major occupational groups – factory workers and the service employees. A two stage sampling procedure was adopted, the ultimate sample size being 200 females who had lived in the city between 1 year to 10 years. The analysis of the data involved such statistical techniques as chi square, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Schefft’s test. The study reveals as hypothesized, that contacts such as the friends and relatives in the city play a significant role in motivating migration decisions and in the process of adjustment in the city, and that the migrants’ role as catalyst is very strong. The study also shows that labor turnover is very high among these female migrants. The study recommends some policy considerations such as strengthening the informal groups to help migrants, expanding the scope for dissemination of proper information on jobs in the city of destination, offering vocational training programs for women at place of origin, and reducing the rate of labor turnover.
