Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the rural water supply in Cambodia. This study is mainly focussed only on people’s participation and benefits in/from the programme existed in Veng village (Ponnhear Pon commune) and Ta Oak village (Chhvaing commune), Ponnhear Leu district, Kandal province, Cambodia. The main finding of the study is that all the beneficiaries tended to participate mainly in the form of implementing, decision making, and rarely in management. Under the programme, the beneficiaries were expected and accepted to contribute either in physical work (especially unpaid labour), or by providing materials (sand, stone or brick) or a small piece of land to cover a part of the programme expenditure. However, the participation in the study areas was constrained by numerous factors. Since introduction of the programme in the areas, many villagers have had adequate safe water for drinking and household consumption all year. Moreover, time and energy saved in obtaining water left them with more time to engage in other productive works especially working in their home garden (growing vegetables, raising animals). Some families had more water available for their home gardening and animal raising in the dry season. It was found that those water collectors, especially women and children, with no such burden could do some other activities for the benefits of society and economy of the family. The recommendations have been presented for improving and promoting the people to participate and share the benefits from the programme. Measures for sustainability of programmes are also recommended.
