Abstract: Celebrating its 1000111 anniversary in 2010, Hanoi is an ancient city which has an interesting city structure based on both original Vietnamese and French colonial architecture. The old city in Hanoi, which is usually called 36 old streets or the Ancient Quarter, is located in central district. The heritage of the Quarter is being affected strongly by the increase of commercial and tourism industries. Environmental pollution, renovation activities in construction and damage of old architecture have appeared in the Quarter. Besides that, the overload of traffic volume, the lack of parking space and the inconvenient of public transportation service are problems that make the need for preservation of Hanoi’s Ancient Quarter has become more urgent. In order to improve the traffic situation in the Quarter, the Area licensing scheme from Singapore was applied. This offers various options, which the most suitable in case of the quarter are the organisation of the ring road, restricted traffic zones and the time prohibition for certain type of vehicles. Some available parking locations were also highlighted with the aim to accommodate the increasing car ownership in the quarter in the years to come. The proposed solutions for the quarter have advantages of their feasibility. Those can be applied immediately based on the capacity of the road network and the limited budget of the city. The further studies should be paid on the improvement of some important intersections of the ring road. The improvement of the bus routes, which integrated with others overall the city, also need much more attentions.
