Abstract: This study looked into the modern co-operatives┬╖ and traditional cooperation among the rural population groups in Sri Lanka and explored the potentiality of amalgamation of these two types of co-operatives┬╖, The survey was conducted in two paddy cultivating areas selected from the dry and wet zones of the country. Data on the socio-economic patterns of paddy cultivators┬╖, and on the occurrence and nature of the traditional co-operation among the paddy farmers was collected and analyzed. While investigating on modern co-operatives, special emphasis was given to the farmer’ s awareness, his attitude , his┬╖ level of participation in the activities of modern co-operatives and his willingness to amalgamate the two systems . Views of concerned government and private personnel on the nature of the present co-operative movement and possible improvement which could be introduced through the integration of the two systems were also considered. It was found that despite certain weaknesses the present co-operative movement in Sri Lanka is makin valuable contributions t o the rural economy. While the farmers awareness of and the attitudes┬╖ towards the modern co-operatives were found to be favorable, the level of participation in the activities of modern co-operatives was very poor. Most of the farmer s were in favour of the idea of integration of the traditional patterns with the modern co-operatives. The study concluded that since most of the farmers are willing t o accept the introduction of traditional patterns to the modern co- operatives, there exist a strong potential of amalgamating the two systems . Therefore, it is recommended that amalgamation of the traditional patterns of co-operation into modern co-operatives may taken as a measure to improve the peasant co-operative movement.
