Abstract: The main objectives of a national park are environmental and biodiversity conservation. However, in most developing nations local people who reside at the vicinity of the park expect that it should also contribute to the social and economic well – being of t he people. This research examines the contribution s of the Natmataung National Park of Chin State, Myanmar. The main focus of the study is the provision and contribution of NNP to the local people for the daily liveli hood because any new concept and practi ce related to nature conservation to be implemented and effective it needs to be relevant to the day – to – day life of the local people in the protected areas . Personal interviews were conducted in 80 households in the two selected villages in and around th e park. The study showed that the park has contributed both positive and negative impacts on the livelihood of the people. Some of the projects undertaken by the park management, and other development agencies appear to be capital intensive both in the sho rt and long term, thus, risking to make them unsustai nable. The results revealed unequal distribution of benefits in the study area . The findings indicate the need to implement participatory approaches as a means of promoting sustainable use of natural res ources through education and awareness building programs focus ing on local people to increase participation in conservation and management activities and improve attitudes. The study suggest s that simple, non – capital intensive and sustainable developmental projects should be undertaken for the betterment of livelihood of the local communities and for the long run sustainability of the NNP .
