Abstract: It is very necessary to preserve ancient city style, especially a place like Beijing’s old city which has had an important role in the history of Chinese construction moreover, Beijing city possesses the most complete cluster of emperor palaces and unique old city characteristics in China. Besides the ancient architectures, the whole of the Beijing old city is one valuable historical heritage for the world. On the other hand, this city is very old there are a lot of old and dilapidated houses within the old city. Today, the central government and Beijing municipal government pay more attention to reconstruction to renew Beijing’s old city. Since 1990, the municipal government has decided to accelerate the rate of the old city’s reconstruction. Every year a lot of dilapidated houses are demolished and more and more new houses are built. Therefore, serious problem is faced: how to preserve the ancient city style and traditional housing features when the old city is reconstructed. This research tries to explore harmonious actions between the preservation and reconstruction, through focusing on increasing the value of land use and comparing the advantages, disadvantages of high-rise and multi-story hoses, based on the existing environmental and lawful conditions and regulations. In conclusion, the research recommends that the current regulations, acts and laws referring to the preservation should be revised in order to suit new situations.
