Abstract: Agricultural cooperatives (ACs) were established to develop the upland region of Thailand since 1993. Empirically, there are many performing and nonperforming ACs. The study aims to assess the performance of ACs. The specific objectives intend to assess the members’ attitude towards ACs evaluate the benefits gained from AC activities by the members and their satisfaction analyze the needs of members and problems associated with AC activities assess the internal and external factors explaining the AC performance and develop strategies for enhancing the performance of ACs. The research used a comparative analysis between performing and nonperforming ACs based on primary survey of 290 member households, key informant interview, focused group discussion, and secondary data sources. The analytical tools are: ANOV A (F-test) and Inter-correlation matrix for the attitudinal analysis Principal Component Analysis – used to form the significant components of membership benefits and Multiple Regression Model – used to predict the members’ satisfaction with AC activities. Significantly, members of the two groups have different attitude towards ACs. Members of the performing ACs have more positive perception and attitude towards ACs than members of the nonperforming ACs. The positive members’ attitude stimulates their contribution for shares and business investment. Consequently, members of the performing ACs have higher perception on benefits gained from and satisfaction with AC activities than members of the nonperforming ACs. Members of the two groups have similar needs regarding AC services, management, and other issues. The needs are related to sufficiency of inputs and credit services, local staff, election of leaders, and approval of new membership. Moreover, they prefer price insurance for agricultural products and financial support for social welfare activities. In contrast, members of the nonperforming ACs suffer due to unavailability of required services, nontransparent management, and
