Abstract: The steady increase in the number of landless people which had reached over 50 percent of total population is frightening. Rapid population growth, scarcity of land, lack of effective Government policies and natural disasters such as Cyclone, flood and river erosion are considered main causes of landlessness in Bangladesh. The issue of land scarcity and landlessness on the one hand and facilitate of employment and income generating activities to landless rural people on the other hand have become a matter of great concern of the Government. The Government with collaboration of international donor agencies have been implementing different project under the name of Ashrayon, Abashon and Adarsha Gram etc. for the socio-economic well being of the landless rural people. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the impact of Adarsha Gram Project on settlers’ employment and income generation. Jaintapur Adarsha Gram Project was chosen for field survey. Household survey, key informants interview and field observation were applied in primary data collection. Secondary data and information were also used. The findings of the study show that the role of the project in creating employment and income generating activities is frustrating. Economic condition of the beneficiaries of the project did not improve after settlement when judged against some indicators such as income, food and non-food expenditure, productive and non productive assets. Lack of technical knowledge and insufficiency of capital for investment were found the main obstacle in creating employment opportunities in project area. Development in social well being of the settlers by some indicators is clear. Upgrading in housing condition is evident which was supported by the key informants’ interview. Progress in access to children schooling, use of sanitary latrine is noticeable.
