Abstract: Rural out-migration becomes one of the main considerations in rural development process, in which complicated motives and mixed outcomes are involved. In Myarunar, Ayeyarwady is one of the regions with high migration rate. This re sear ch attempts to examine the motives and outcomes of rural out-migration in the context of rural area in Ayeyarwady. The main objective of the research is to study the factors influ encing decision for rural out-migration and their associated impacts on rural household s. The specific objectives are to study the charact eristic s of short term and long term migrant s to identify the factors influ encing decision for rural out-migration to examine the eco nomic and soc ial impacts of out-migration on rural migrant household s and to recommend the developm ent programs implementing in the local area. The resea rch u ses primar y data collected from 120 rural migrant hou seholds from seve n village s in Bogale Town ship in Ayeyarwady Region. It was focused on quantitative data analy ses applying descriptiv e statistics and statistical tests, and supported with qualitative statements. The findings of the resea rch highlight that tho se who are mor e mobile, have stronger famil y ties and employed in villages befor e migration, are more potential to engage in short term migration pattern , and those who are less mobil e, have weak family ties and unemplo yed before migration, are more likely to involve in long term migration pattern . The migration decision of those migrants is found to be influ enced by the personal, hou sehold and community fac tor s.
