Abstract: In ternal labor migration has taken place in China in large scale since 1978. Due to the low income from agriculture and limited job employment, rural people moved to urban are for income generation, in order to fulfill the household ‟ s life. With the increase of inequality in economy between rural and urban area, the movement from rural to urban area was becoming popular. A great numbers of migrants are leaving behind their household members, dependents, at the origin to venture economic gain in urban area. An d almost all the households received the remittance from the migrants. But given on the characteristics of migrant, the amount of remittance is different and further the purposes in the use of remittance are also different. The research dealt with the econ omic effects of migration in w estern China t hrough analyzing the c haracteristics of labor migrants and causes of migration and variation s in amount of remittances in both upland and lowland of the study area as well as the use of remittance . The research was conducted with three groups of high, medium and low based on the remittances they received in the four villages located in Sich ua n of China using a survey questionnaire as a prime tool with a total of 12 9 sampled household s. Other data col lection methods included field observation and key informants. The research focused on both qualitative and quantitative techniques. Main findings of this research found that the internal periodic migration has taken place in the western region of China , due to scarce employment opportunities, poor economic situation and the low income from agriculture. Most of the migrants from both upland and lowland villages in the study area were working as unskilled worker s and they were distributed into different des tinations in China.
