Abstract: This study was conducted to identify and explore food production system and their sufficiency level among rural households in a region of northern Chin State and to describe the practicing strategies for food self-sufficiency in two villages namely Teeklui and Dimpi. The study villages were purposively selected and stratified random sampling method was used in selecting a total sample of 72 households. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected by using a set of structured questionnaire, and checklist with field observations. Descriptive statistics was used for data analysis. There were many factors influenced for food production of which farm inputs, farming technology, resources and natural phenomena were the main influenced factors in the region. In average, the households have achieved only 5 months food sufficiency for the cropping year 2006. In order to achieve food sufficiency for the whole, the household are currently engaged in other activities apart from principal food production (corn in this case). Through these activities, it is assumed that the rural households in northern region of Chin State become food sufficient for the whole year. However, accordingly with their wealth rank, incomes and expenses were different. Poor and poorer household spend more than 70 percent of their income for food while better off and moderate household spend less than 65 percent. Consequently, better off and moderate household able to use their income for child education, health, investment to farming activities, and other purposes than poor and poorer households
